ITS 2010
월요일, 06 9월 2010 11:46

IMG_1473The Survivors sent a lot of players to the ITS this weekend, to play a format of rugby some of the guys are fairly unfamiliar with - Touch Rugby. The event was a good chance for the boys to have a run around, practice some ball skills, and network a little with other rugby players from around Korea and Asia. Most of the local teams could be seen sporting a few Survivors players, with some of our guys playing in both the men's and mixed divisions.

At the business end of things; the Survivors' 1st team put in a good showing to make it to the semi-finals of the men's division. They were leading Hong Kong Thunder (the eventual winners) with 5 minutes to go, before Thunder managd to pull off a couple of tricks to snatch the win. The Survivors' Colts team also had a good run. They lost all their pool games, but showed some good skills, and scored a few good tries. In the mixed division, Survivors' Nathan Atkins led 'Tits for Hands' to victory, beating NUS from Singapore in the finals.

Overall, the day was a great success. Great weather, and soft grass pitches, gave the boys a chance for a good work-out as they build up towards the fall Yellow Sea Cup and Oakwood Cup fixtures.

Survivors place 1st & 3rd at Korea Tens, Changwon
월요일, 23 8월 2010 13:13

koreatensThis weekend saw the Survivors take the long trek to Changwon for the thrid leg of the Korea Tens. The Survivors were again able to take two teams and both played well - with the Survivors A finishing the day unbeaten to win the event, and the Killer Bees finishing third, only losing out to the combined team of Jeonnam and Cheongju.

The evening saw a great all you can eat/drink party in Changwon, with many new members to the club being initiated into the Survivors ranks. This was followed on Sunday with an afternoon on the beach in Busan - fun times!

Survivors win Korea 10s - Cheongju
일요일, 04 7월 2010 11:22

Group_PhotoRound two of the Korea Tens was hosted by the Cheongju Knights, at Chungbuk University in Cheongju. Teams from Jeonnam, Gumi, Cheongju, and Seoul (as well as the usual pick-ups) came together for a great day's rugby action.

A 5-team round robin was played out - each team getting four twenty minute games. The first game was Gumi (the main contender for the Survivors' crown) vs. the Killer Bees. An unfortunate navigation problem meant that half the Gumi team went to Jeongju instead of Cheongju - so the Killer Bees thought they had a real chance of upsetting Gumi. The Bees put up a good fight and were leading with 5 minutes to go, until the Gumi scrum-half, Victor, scored off the blind-side of a ruck - teaching the Bees a good lesson in defence. The game ended 12-10 to Gumi.

Sad News
목요일, 22 7월 2010 11:20

NickIt is with great sadness that I must report the passing away of a great friend and legendary Survivor, Nick Van Gelder. He was with us on the pitch from 1999-2000, and with us off the pitch until his untimely death on July 18 of this year. One week prior to that date, he suffered a massive heart attack from which he was unable to recover. Nick was healthy, fit and young...the attack was just a case of horribly bad luck.

On the pitch "Lovey Dovey" played with us memorably on our tours to Saigon, Vietnam in the fall of 99 and to the Guam 10s in our first appearance there in 2000. It was in Guam that Nick played his final game of rugby. After leading our team to two victories at the start, he suffered a terrible leg injury in the third game and was taken to the hospital with multiple tears in his knee. We didn't win another game in that tournament after that. Suffice to say losing him was the end for us as well. He was an exceptionally good back and had the ability to turn a game with his clever passing and running.

Survivors Place 1st & 2nd at Gangnam 10s
일요일, 27 JUNE 2010 22:18

gangnam_10s_2010Both Survivors teams finished the day unbeaten at the Gangnam 10s to continue a great season of rugby. The SS Killer Bees, swelled by imports from the Gunsan and Yongsan bases, easily dominated the middle pool, with good wins against Yonsei University Old Boys and the Incheon Anchors. The Survivors A were seeded in the top division, but with SNU Affiliated Highschool OBs failing to turn up, they only had to beat old rivals Haka. Haka had a big squad and were well up for the game, but the Survivors held firm and did a good job of controlling the game to run out comfortable winners.

After a long break, and some jiggery-pokery with the schedule, each Survivors team was given one more game. The Killer Bees made tough work of beating Gangnam-gu Rugby Club, down at half-time, they made some tactical substitutions to ensure they finished the day with three wins from three. The Survivors A also had a tough final match against a weighty Bucheon RFC, but they held firm against some big runners to complete the clean sweep for the Survivors.
