The last time the Shanghai Hairy Crabs came to Seoul the weather was cold and grey and the Surviors were put on the wrong end of a 41-10 scoreline. But this past weekend was sunny and warm and the Crabs were made to regret running up the score last November.

During the long, cold off-season, the Survivors worked very hard on fitness and conditioning, so competition for spots on the roster was much tougher this year than last. The run-on side for Saturday's game featured only six players who got the nod last autumn; the Crabs had to face a much different squad this time around.

Incheon RFC Tests Survivors

Incheon Mechanical Technical High School hosted the Seoul Survivors in a 15s match the Saturday prior to a huge Yellow Sea Cup showdown against the Shanghai Hairy Crabs on May 5th.  While the name reads “High School” it is not what you might think.  These are not 17 year old boys with acne running around.  In reality, the institution is basically a university and the players are full grown men who train and play hard.

The match featured uncontested scrums, but was hard fought nonetheless.  Incheon primarily ran the ball in the channel between the forwards and backs.  They used their fly half and large centers to do this and did it reasonably well.  In addition, they competed fiercely at the breakdown and won a lot of turnover ball.

Seoul was still too much to handle in the end.  The Survivors exploited Incheon in the line outs - gaining meters by pushing the defense backwards with tight, driving mauls.  And when the ball was spun wide, Survivor backs, with their combination of speed, power and quick decision making proved too much for Incheon in defense.  Five tries to two was the final tally.

All in all, it was a fantastic test match for a Survivor side that will face a much higher level of competition this Saturday at 3 p.m. on the U.S. Military base at Yongsan.

Time for a well deserved beer!
Time for a well deserved beer!

Most of the familiar faces, along with a few fresh ones, from the Seoul Survivor and Morning Calm teams stirred from their winter hibernations on March 3rd and met on a patch of earth nearly half regulation size. Nobody seemed to care. Club level rugby in Korea was finally getting underway in the year of the Mayan Apocalypse – 2012.

Saturday saw the final preparations put in place for the upcoming YSC game. The Survivors took on a select military 15s on the Yongsan army base. The Survivors, missing a number of senior players through injury and unavailability, were fielding a new look line-up - hoping that they would be ready for the YSC cup the following week.

The military team, again showed improvements - putting up a good fight. But the Survivors were able to run in comfortable winners, 5 tries to 2.

For the Survivors, Manila 10s International Rugby Festival got off to an inauspicious start. Arriving late at night, the tourists found that the hotel had cancelled their reservations. After being forced to relocate to another hostelry and having a team meeting/hydration session, the boys retired "early."

The official tournament draw placed the Survivors in Division 2, Pool A alongside old rivals the Tokyo Gaijin as well as two Filipino sides, the Alabang Ibons and the Manila Hapons. And, as luck would have it, Pool A drew the first matches of the day. The Survivors started their campaign against a well rested Alabong side that proved too awake and too sober to contend with. Sloppy and ill-organized, the Survivors squandered the few chances they had with ball in hand, and proved vulnerable in defense.

The inglorious defeat, however, sparked some life into the side and the Survivors were ready and raring for their next fixture.

Surviors & Mils
Surviors & Mils
This past weekend saw an early morning trip to Gwangyang for a 3-way, 15s tournament with the Jeonnam Aliens and a combined military team. Beautiful scenery and weather conditions saw a bright start to the morning, with the first game between the Aliens & Military. A hard-hitting game ended with the Aliens comfortably winning, although the miltary team showed their potential and huge improvements from where they were only a few months ago.
