The schedule for the Asian 5 Nations has been announced, and this year it's a little more important for the teams taking part.
The winner gets an automatic qualifying spot for the Rugby World Cup in 2011 (in pool A including New Zealand & France), and the runner up goes into a cross-continental qualifying game for pool B (including Argentina & England).
The schedule is as follows:
- April 24th vs. Hong Kong (away)
- May 1st vs. Japan (home)
- May 15th vs. Arabian Gulf (away)
- May 22nd vs. Kazakhstan (home)
The 2009 a5n were dominated by Japan (coached by John Kirwan); scoring 271 points and conceeding only 41. They posted an 87-11 win over Kazakhstan and an 80-9 win over Korea - to easily top the group. The runner's up place was much more hotly contested with Kazakhstan just beating Korea 30-27 to take the second spot. This year both teams have to visit Korea, so I'm sure Korea will be hoping for better results.
