Sunday saw 6 men's teams and 2 women's teams turn up for the third installment of the Military 10s, at Yongsan Army Base. The Survivors, who were vastly understrength with a lot of guys playing out of position, played 3x20 minute games against: The Cheongju Knights, Yongsan, and The Jeonnam Aliens.
The Survivors started very slowly in their first game. The forwards were too slow to the breakdown, giving the Knights plenty of opportunity to turn the ball over, and the backs struggled to create anything and deal with the Knights' direct running. The Knights put in two good tries in the first half, and were looking good. The Survivors came back into the game in the second half; with more hustle at the breakdown and some more direct running resulting in a late try. However, the Knights held on to give the Survivors their first loss of the Military Tens.
Next up were the Yongsan Military Team. Hurting off the back of the loss to the Knights - the Survivors were out for revenge. Much more direct running from the forwards, and more conviction at the breakdown meant the Survivors had a never-ending stream of possession to feed to the backs. New scrum-half Tom Emerton was able to make good use of this and ran in a number of tries, giving the Survivors an easy win.
The final game was against the Jeonnam Aliens. The Survivors were much more focussed going into this game than they had been against Cheongju, and the forwards again played well - winning a lot of turn-over ball at the breakdown. The backs continued to make good use of the ball, and the Survivors ran out comfortable winners.
A tough day for the Survivors - with their first loss of the league! However, there were lots of promising signs, with new players stepping up, and guys performing well out of position. |
