On Saturday March, 31st about 16 Survivors made the long subway trek to Pyongtaek for the Camp Humphreys 10s and returned with a nice piece of hardware to stash away at Scrooge Pub in Itaewon.
 | | A teen walking and texting in the subway caused a normally sure handed Survivor to drop the trophy. It only took 3 grown men to put it back together again. |
The first fixture saw the Survivors pitted against a strong Jeonnam Aliens side. Seoul competed hard at nearly every breakdown and enjoyed sufficient possession to frustrate the Jeonnam defense and stymie their rhythm on attack. Although the game remained tight through the first half, the Survivors put it out of reach midway through the second half. No tries were conceded to Jeonnam.
In their second match of the day, Seoul drew the Osan military side. Play was sloppy and hard-hitting, yet the Survivors still managed to score early and often. The fact that Osan played females at two key positions may have had something to do with this.

 | | JoeDay | Huge congratulations go out to Joe Day, a member of the Seoul Survivors for more than thirty years, as he is made the first Life Member of Seoul Survivors RFC. Joe has always been a very active and enthusiastic member of the club and fully deserves this reward.
The Survivors are planning a big reunion in New Zealand next year to help them enjoy the Rugby World Cup. One aspect of this reunion is the "Survivors' History project". A big effort is being put into formalising the club's histoy and putting together official records of what has happened within the club since its inception back in 1978. The roster of Life Members and major contributors to the club is one very important aspect of this project, and Joe fully deserves to be the first name on the list. |

 | | the_horse | On a rain-soaked Saturday afternoon, Korea started very brightly against Kazakhstan - rushing to an early 17-0 lead. Two tries from the forwards, including celebrity prop Kim Gwong Sik, and a great running try from the backs, saw Korea back to their old ways - and looking to dominate the Kazakhstanis. However, man-of-the-match Anton 'the-horse' Rudoy had different ideas. His try, combined with some good kicking saw Kazakhstan close the gap to 20-13 at half time. Korea started the second half the same as the first with a quick try through the forwards. But fatigue and the rainy conditions started to affect the Koreans, and Kazakhstan were able to run in three more tries (including two more to Rudoy). The game ended 32-25, but it could have been different if not for a try-saving tackle from Rudoy in the last minutes, which resulted in him being sin-binned for the remainder of the game.

The schedule for the Asian 5 Nations has been announced, and this year it's a little more important for the teams taking part.
The winner gets an automatic qualifying spot for the Rugby World Cup in 2011 (in pool A including New Zealand & France), and the runner up goes into a cross-continental qualifying game for pool B (including Argentina & England).

The Asian games has included rugby since the 1998 games - showing the Olympics how it's done. Korea dominated the first four events, winning gold at each one. In 2006, Korea came very close to continuing this trend, losing a very close final to Japan 27-26.
However, a shock defeat in the group phase this year (losing to China 5-12), meant Korea met Japan in the semi-finals. They lost the game 15-28, but managed to take revenge over China in the 3rd/4th play-off, winning 21-14 to secure a bronze medal.
Adding a bronze to their tally, keeps Korea top of the Asian Games Rugby medal table with 6 medals from 6 events. |

It is with great sadness that I must report the passing away of a great friend and legendary Survivor, Nick Van Gelder. He was with us on the pitch from 1999-2000, and with us off the pitch until his untimely death on July 18 of this year. One week prior to that date, he suffered a massive heart attack from which he was unable to recover. Nick was healthy, fit and young...the attack was just a case of horribly bad luck.
On the pitch "Lovey Dovey" played with us memorably on our tours to Saigon, Vietnam in the fall of 99 and to the Guam 10s in our first appearance there in 2000. It was in Guam that Nick played his final game of rugby. After leading our team to two victories at the start, he suffered a terrible leg injury in the third game and was taken to the hospital with multiple tears in his knee. We didn't win another game in that tournament after that. Suffice to say losing him was the end for us as well. He was an exceptionally good back and had the ability to turn a game with his clever passing and running.

Korea are now half-way through their pursuit of the Asian 5 Nations trophy, and things aren't looking too good! With back-to-back losses away to Hong-Kong and at home to Japan, Korea are firmly rooted to the bottom of the table. With only 1 try in their first two games, and a lack of creative rugby, Korea haven't yet managed a bonus point - leaving them 5 points adrift on 0 points. With two hard games to go, against Kazakhstan and the Arabian Gulf, Korea's dreams of getting into the Rugby World Cup, have now been replaced by the real possibility of finishing bottom and being relegated to Division 1! |

The Survivors travelled down to Gumi this weekend for a game against a new team starting up in Gumi. The team are made up from the Gumi Waegook Cooks, a team that take part in the Spire Touch Series. The boys travelled down Saturday morning, had an afternoon game, and then a few 'quiet' drinks in the evening. A good time was had by all. |
